Ingredients For Vegans To Look Out For in Chips
When it comes to chips it’s not always that easy knowing of it’s vegan by looking at the ingredients label. There can be hidden ingredients that actually makes a vegan chips flavor non-vegan or sometimes the production process of an ingredient can make actually make it non-vegan.
Today I will show you a few common ingredients that vegans need to look out for in chips.
It’s very common to use sugar in chips and this can cause some problems if it’s cane sugar. This sugar is the most common sugar used in the candy and snacks industry, which can make it hard for vegans to eat chips that has sugar in it. Raw cane sugar is 100% vegan-friendly, however if it’s refined cane sugar then that can be an issue for vegans.
In order for the cane sugar to fit the products better it needs to be refined and in this process, the sugar is also bleached. It’s in this process the problem can occur. A very common method of bleaching cane sugar is to use bone char from dead cows.
This raises an issue for most vegan, because animals are used in the production process. If bone char would be used in the bleaching process, that would make the sugar not vegan-friendly. It’s impossible to know for sure and if you are concerned, then you should contact the product company and ask.
Palm oil is also a common oil used in chips along with sunflower oil and canola oil. However the there is an big issue when it comes to palm oil and that’s the severe deforestation taking place to make room for the palm oil production. This leaves a lot of animal such as orangutans and rhinos without a home.
This is an issue that has been recognized not only vegans, but people all around the world. A lot of vegans tends to stay away from palm oil to take a stand against this heartbreaking exploitation against the animals.
However there is an way to make palm oil more vegan-friendly and that is called RSPO. This stands for Roundtable On Sustainable Palm Oil. This organisation helps companies produce and buy sustainable palm oil. So if you come a cross a company that has palm oil in their product then you can head over to RSPO members area and search for the company.
If you find the company, then that means that they are RSPO certified and indeed vegan-friendly.
This ingredient can be a tricky one. It’s an umbrella term, which means that a lot of ingredients can be put here and the company only needs to call it natural flavors. It’s impossible to know if this ingredient is vegan or not unless it’s disclosed on the ingredients label.
Artificial is another controversial ingredient that sometimes can be found in chips. The problem with this ingredient is the fact that animal testing is still being done and this does not align well with ethical vegans.
There are other great testing methods such as computer simulations that can be used instead.
The problem with this ingredient is that it’s commonly made with ingredients derived from animals. It can be made from plants as well.
There are a lot of ingredients that can be made with milk such as cheese, whey and lactose. There are more ingredients that could contain milk, so always be on the lookout for this.
This ingredient is quite popular and so always be sure to read the ingredients label.
I’ve put in more hours than I can count into making this article and the research behind it.
I hope you will enjoy this big list of vegan chips, I know I will.
If you have a vegan chips flavor that can’t be found in this list please send it to us and I will add it to the list. Let’s making the biggest vegan chips list on the web together.
