Lipton Onion Soup Mix is a product that has been around for decades. It is a simple mix of dehydrated onions and seasonings that can be used to make a variety of dishes. Lipton Onion Soup Mix is a versatile and affordable product that is a staple in many pantries. However, is Lipton Onion Soup Mix vegan?
Lipton Onion Soup Mix is probably vegan, but contains natural flavors, disodium inosinate and disodium guanylate, which could contain ingredients sourced from animals.
Next we will take a look at the ingredients.
Lipton Onion Soup Mix Ingredients
Below is a list of ingredients from all the flavors that I could find.
- Corn Starch
- Corn Syrup Solids
- Caramel Color
- Hydrolyzed Soy Protein
- Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil
- Yeast Extract
- Monosodium Glutamate
- Natural Flavors
- Disodium Inosinate And Disodium Guanylate
As always I’ve highlighted the ingredients that we need to take a closer look at.
Sugar is a controversial ingredient within the vegan community. The reason for this is the possibility of bone char being used in the production process. Beet sugar and raw cane sugar is always vegan, but when if the cane sugar is refined it could be non-vegan.
In the refining process the sugar is also bleached and a common method is to use bone char from dead cows. Exploiting animals in the production process is not vegan-friendly. Most of the time the source of the sugar is not disclosed on the ingredients label, making it a very uncertain ingredient for vegans.
This ingredient is also a tricky ingredient for vegans because natural flavors is an umbrella term, meaning that it often consists of several ingredients without the source of these ingredients ever being disclosed.
This will create a problem for vegans because this means that the ingredients could be sourced from animals. Natural flavors is very often vegan-friendly, but there is no way to be 100% unless contacting the company.
Soy & Corn
Soy and corn are two of the most common GMO crops in the US and this crop can cause problems to the environment surrounding the farm. In order for the GMO crop to grow it requires a high amount of herbicide and this can pollute the surrounding ecosystem, damaging it beyond repair.
Therefore many vegans are looking for product that has the label non GMO Project. This is an organisation that ensures that the product does not contain any GMO’s.
Disodium Inosinate And Disodium Guanylate
These two ingredients are generally vegan, but they can be made from ingredients sourced from animals.
Hopefully the Lipton Onion Soup Mix is vegan. I’ve contacted the company and I will update the article once, they respond. With so many questionable ingredient it only takes one being sourced from animals to make the product non-vegan.
Thanks for reading, take care!
