As always I’ve highlighted the ingredients that we need to take a closer look at.
Non-Vegan Ingredients
Milk
There are several ingredients made from cow’s milk that can be found in several Great Value potato chips flavors. These ingredients are not vegan.
Disodium Inosinate
This ingredient is mainly made from fish, pigs and chicken. It can be made from tapioca starch, but it’s not that common.
Questionable Ingredients
Sugar
Sugar is actually more common than you think in chips flavors. The most commonly used sugar is refined cane sugar. This can be a problem for vegan because the production process.
When the cane sugar is refined it is often bleached. This is where to the problem might occur, because bone char from dead cows is a popular way to bleach the sugar.
This would make the sugar non-vegan, because it’s exploiting animals in the production process.
Disodium Guanylate
Can be made from animals or mushrooms.
Enzymes
The reason enzymes is here is because it can be made from both plants and animals.
Mono- And Diglycerides
Same goes with this ingredient, it can also be made from both animals and plants.
Natural Flavors
This ingredient can be a bit tricky for vegans, because it can contain both ingredients from plants and animals. Companies can but in ingredients here and not needing to disclose it on the label.
There is an example where National Geographic revealed that butt goo from beavers can be found in some vanilla flavors. Think about that for a second.
The only way to be sure is to contact the company and ask.
Artificial Colors
This is a very controversial ingredient within the vegan community. Dietary vegans tend to consume this while ethical vegans don’t. Why is this?
The main reason is the animal testing that is still being conducted, which could be replaced with computer simulation instead.
The ingredients do not contain any animal-derived ingredient and it’s up to you if you want to consume artificial colors.
